Chris Gardner (Stockbroker,
Investor & Businessman)
- No pleasant childhood: His
stepfather was physically abusive to his mother and sisters.
- During teenage, he did odd jobs
i.e. washing dishes at a restaurant, attending to elderly patients at a nursing
home etc.
- He joined the US Navy and got
posted at the US Navy Hospital Corps School, where he got training in the
basics of first-aid.
- As Gardner was not earning
enough money to support his family, he decided to take a job as a medical
equipment salesman.
- He quit his sales job so that
he could dedicate his time exclusively to training as a stockbroker. Enrolled
on a trainee at a stock brokerage, he didn't have enough money to raise the
deposit to rent an apartment.
- He was homeless until he became
a full time employee.
- Finally, he could rent a home
for himself and his son. In 1987, he opened his own investment firm, Gardner
Rich.
- The movie “The Pursuit of
Happyness (2006)” was based on Chris Gardner's nearly one-year struggle being
homeless. ‘Will Smith’ acted as Gardner, a homeless salesman.
